How a video podcast is filmed: cameras, light and sound

Updated · 7 min read

Filming a video podcast is three jobs happening at once: several cameras, a separate microphone for every person at the table, and light that does not change over the course of the conversation. In this guide we describe how that looks from the inside of our studio, what the operator does during that time and what filming a full episode costs.

How filming a video podcast differs from an audio recording

An audio podcast needs quiet and microphones. A video podcast adds framing, light and the fact that every person at the table has to look good from the first minute to the last. That is exactly why a video podcast is not filmed with a single camera: editing needs somewhere to cut to.

The practical difference shows up in the edit. In an audio recording you cut out an unnecessary pause or a repetition and nobody hears it. In video a cut is visible straight away, unless there is another camera to show at that moment. The more angles you have filmed, the freer the edit and the shorter and denser the final episode.

If you are still deciding whether your show needs video at all, we write about that separately in our guide on video or audio podcast.

How many cameras there are and what each one does

Sound: the part the viewer notices first

A viewer forgives a simpler picture, but does not forgive bad sound. The studio has up to 4 professional podcast microphones, one for each person at the table. There are just as many seats: up to 4 people take part in a recording at the same time.

The microphones feed into a sound desk, so every voice is handled separately. That matters when one person speaks loudly and another quietly, or when you need to cut one person's cough without muting the whole table.

Still, the most important part of the sound is not the microphone but the room. Our studio is on level -1 in a courtyard and is soundproofed, so street and neighbour noise does not get into the recording. This is worth checking in any studio, because city rumble or the hum of ventilation cannot be removed in the edit.

How the filming day goes

When you arrive, the cameras, the light and the microphones are already set up. Together we check the sound, agree on the framing and start. The operator works alongside you throughout the shoot and is included in the price, so you do not have to think about whether everything is being recorded.

The full podcast package includes 2.5 hours in the studio. That is usually enough to get ready, record an hour or an hour and a half of conversation and record the intro and the outro separately. If you make a mistake, there is no need to start again: just repeat the sentence and we will cut the unnecessary part out in the edit.

What to wear, how to prepare for the conversation and when to arrive is in our guide on how to prepare for your first shoot. Photos of the studio and the full equipment list are on the studio page.

After the shoot we agree on the editing style and note the places that need to be adjusted or cut. You get the edited episode in 3-7 working days, and one round of revisions is free. We write more about that on the editing page, and about turning the same recording into short content in our guide on Reels and Shorts from a podcast.

What filming a video podcast costs

The most common choice is the full package, where filming and editing are one price. If you edit yourself, you can take just the studio with an operator.

When we are the right fit and when we are not

We do not rent out the studio without an operator. If you have your own filming crew and all you need is an empty room with a table, we will be too expensive for you.

We are also the wrong fit when you want to record the podcast at your guest's place, in an office or at an event. A studio solves nothing in that case, but we can come to you: we describe that on our on-location filming page.

We are the right fit when you want a regular show that looks and sounds the same every time, and you want to leave the technology and the editing to someone else. We do the same for our own shows: "Tapk Geresniu", "NT Be Grimo", "Suaugusių moterų klubas" and others are recorded in this same studio.

Frequently asked

How many cameras are used to film a video podcast?
In our studio, up to 5 professional Sony video cameras. Usually one films the wide shot, and the others are used for close-ups of the people and for extra angles, from which the episode is edited.
Does every person get their own microphone?
Yes. The studio has up to 4 podcast microphones, as many as there are seats at the table. Every voice is recorded separately, so it can be adjusted in the edit without touching the others.
How long does filming one episode take?
The full podcast package includes 2.5 hours in the studio. That covers getting ready, the conversation itself and recording the intro and outro separately.
Can several episodes be recorded in one day?
Yes, the eight-hour day with an operator at €600 + VAT is meant for that. Editing is not included in that price and is counted per episode.
Can a video podcast be streamed live at the same time?
Yes. We stream from the studio to YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn and Microsoft Teams at €200 + VAT per hour. That includes the studio, the setup and the equipment, and you also get the recording.
